Covid Interference

May 16, 2020
It's been too long. I noticed just yesterday that it's been over two months since I was last here. This virus has prevented me from doing anything noteworthy to write about. I wasn't going to say, "Linda and I spent the day watching Coronavirus news, eating and going back to bed." The weather hasn't been conducive to riding, working on the bikes or doing yard work until this past week so now I have something to write about.
This is Linda's Birthday weekend so this morning we went to Burger King and got breakfast at the Drive Through window. We both love their Croissant breakfast sandwiches and the Hash Brown nuggets so it wasn't like we just did it to go cheap. After returning home we proceeded to do yard work trimming down a bush and moving brick borders back to place. The temperature wasn't oppressive and the work was done quickly. The yard is looking much better. And lest you think I'm a cheap cad tomorrow is Linda's birthday and we'll get food from Olive Garden or Applebee's.
In light of the conditions out in the world I haven't done much in the way of two wheel travel. Last week I took the two motorcycles into town to get them inspected, riding for the first time in over a month. Today I pulled the big scooter out of the garage for a short ride. The scooter has a big travel trunk on the back and I stopped at Acme Supermarket to buy roses for Linda for her birthday. I also took advantage of the recent cheap gas prices and filled the scooter with Premium for $2.95.
For dinner we barbecued chicken on our new gas grill and it was delicious. Following that I landed in this chair to update my sadly overdue blog. What I hope from now forward is that the weather will be nicer and future entries will be more plentiful. The good news is that the local Drive In theaters are opening next week so maybe we will have the occasion to catch up on some movie time together. Come back for news and reviews.

Spring Is Coming

March 14, 2020
In the last month or so we have had weather warm enough to begin the process of riding again. My first run of the year was on my big scooter during a warm spell in February. I thought I would be foiled when I went to start it and saw the battery maintainer was unplugged. Usually I would expect nothing more than a clicking noise as the lack of voltage kept it from spinning the starter. Happily it fired right up and settled into a steady idle. The ride about the area was a nice break from the W...

Winter Waiting

January 27, 2020
I get really down this time of year about not being able to ride the bikes. If it isn't too cold or snowing then the road salt on the streets keeps my bikes in the garage. What has me hopeful for the coming season is that the local motorcycle group (hvbikers.com) is building momentum and listing rides in the area for the coming Spring. There is even talk of starting a weekly gathering in some location in the Hudson Valley to rekindle the spirit of the departed Marcus Dairy Superbike Sunday. T...

Christmas Time Is Here

December 22, 2019
The year is coming to an end with many highs and lows to its credit. First the passing of my Father in May was probably the bottom. Discovering the Hudson Valley Bikers Network online with a constantly updated list of motorcycle events added some adventure to my riding life. Linda and I have been wearing a groove in the roads traveling to Long Island to visit Mom and friends down there. My car has seen a lot of action in this regard.
The garage is lighter from the number of bikes and scooters ...

Thanksgiving Report

December 1, 2019
This past Monday the weather was an inviting 55 degrees with brilliant sunshine. Time for another last ride of the season. I pulled the Honda Nighthawk out of the garage and it fired up immediately. The roads were mostly dry but it was salty in spots. The air was crisp and the bike ran strong for its size. The roads around here have a nice assortment of curves and rises that suit the Honda well. After a nice but short thirty mile trip we were back in the garage. I oiled up the chain to let it...

The Season Ends

November 12, 2019
I'm sitting here looking out the window on a thin blanket of freshly fallen snow. It may look pretty in pictures but it dampens my spirit to think that four or five months of foul weather is beginning. It was a month ago that we had a ninety degree day and brilliant sunshine. To my mechanical side all I can think about is that the roads will be coated in salt and my motorcycles will be exiled to the garage for several months only coming to life for weekly two minute warmups. Sigh.
On a brighte...

A Happy Ending

October 19, 2019
My big scooter is back in the garage! As I suspected, but feared worse, it was a wire that was rubbed through and couldn't carry current anymore. The only consolation in this is that the young men at the shop I took it to had to invest a great deal of time removing all the plastic panels and chase through all the wiring to find it. I rode it home and it hasn't lost a step, running as well as always. A longer ride is in the plans before Winter shuts us down.
This past Thursday we drove down to ...

A Disappointing Ride

October 14, 2019
Yesterday I had many options to go on a group ride but picked the one closest to me. It was supposed to be a benefit ride for a charity and I was glad to go. In the morning I fired up the big Kawasaki, pulled on my leather jacket and took off on what was supposed to be a day on the road.
It was a fairly lovely day with a brisk temperature and leaves are beginning to change color around here so I peeped a little on the way to the start. I arrived at the park where the ride was scheduled to star...

Giving In

September 25, 2019
I don't remember the movie but Clint Eastwood said, "A man has to know his limitations" in it. I always remember that when one of my machines needs the attention of an expert. I heard it in my head when my big scooter, pictured above, had its lights go out. As near as I could tell the problem lay in the miles of electrical wiring inside the scooter. Fortunately there is a shop nearby that will work on it so it sits there now. Hopefully it will be home soon.
This past weekend Linda and I took a...

Another Week, Another Ride

September 9, 2019
I had planned for several weeks to attend the first annual David Gabriel memorial ride starting in Wappingers Falls. What I hadn't decided until almost the last minute was which of my three motorcycles I would ride. A few days before the event I ran my options through my head and settled on the big Kawasaki.

I had already taken the Honda and CF Moto scooter on group rides while the Kawasaki languished in the garage. I also felt that its engine size would save me some work riding among the Larg...
