The Very Big Weekend

September 19, 2024
The last few years my brother, Bill, would drive down from his home near Rochester, NY and do an event in the area with me. Each year we have increased the days we ride and this year that number was three times. The biggest surprise this year was the bike Bill trailered down. In the past it was a 1986 Honda Shadow 1100cc with a V-Twin engine that he acquired from a neighbor. When he pulled into the driveway with his trailer this time I was surprised to see a 1984 Honda V65 Sabre 1100cc strapped down. For those uninitiated with motorcycle history the V65 was a beast in its day. It was able to smoke rear tires at a moment's notice and blast through 1/4 miles in 11 seconds at 120 mph. Even today it's impressive with a big V-4 engine and and looks to match.
Since the Sabre was Bill's summer project and hadn't been ridden a lot yet he was interested in getting some seat time. The roads around here are an excellent test track and I mapped out a route in my head that would work. Off we went for a brief 41 mile, Day 1, spin that would test all the components of his bike. Suffice it to say we came back smiling and Bill noted, "These are the kind of roads you dream about."
The next day, Saturday, rain was in the forecast for the afternoon so we got an early start for another ride. This one clocked in at 72 miles and ventured further north into Dutchess County on another group of excellent routes. Even with some mist in the air the roads were still dry and while cloudy out the weather was good. Bill's new acquisition was running better all the time and he was smiling more with every mile.
Day 3 was the reason he came. There's an event that starts in Kingston, NY that attracts a large group of attendees and it is really worth doing. This year there were roughly 218 registered entrants and the line of motorcycles stretched out pretty long on the highway. The route goes through many pretty and challenging roads in the Catskill Mountains and you are never bored at the handlebars. Bill and I were together and we were riding at a relaxed pace behind large bagger style motorcycles with no trouble. As always the ride was pleasant and the scenery excellent. It stretched out for a little over 60 miles and before long we were at the end. There was an excellent barbecue there with tables and cold drinks and we sat among other riders hashing out the trip.
After satisfying our appetites we struck off for home enjoying the sunshine and scenic trip. We added another 110 miles for the weekend total  racking up 223 miles of excellent riding. Bill was very happy with his new ride and we had added more great memories to the Good Times Together book. After each time we stepped back into the house our wives would smile knowingly at the banter we exchanged about the rides. They know us only too well and that we were very happy campers after each ride. Next year can't come soon enough.

Second Suicide Prevention Ride

August 5, 2024
Every year at the end of July I have attended another Suicide Prevention Ride out of Poughkeepsie. This year was no exception, Starting at a local Bar and Grill the ride has used great routes and an exceptional barbecue at the end to top it off. Most of the time I have ridden the ride the route follows roads I have seen before, but not this year. After using the usual streets we suddenly turned onto a couple of roads that surprised me. Wide open pastures with tight curves and rises and desce...

Bike Night In Pleasant Valley

July 20, 2024
As member of the Hudson Valley Biker Network on Facebook I get to see announcements of upcoming rides and Bike Nights. Imagine my happiness when one occurred four miles from home. A new drinking establishment opened last year in the same building where I had my motorcycles serviced and it was chosen for one of the Pop Up Bike Nights this Summer. Since it was a really nice night weather-wise and so close I attended. Being so near I chose the most suitable bike for the job, in this case the 25...

The Red Knights Ride

July 15, 2024

I'm still buzzing from the ride so bear with me. It started 5 miles from here. I took the CF Moto just for laughs and carrying capacity.  When I got there I found out that it was a self navigating ride so no big crowd in the way. Once the scooter got good and hot it really ran well. I had to stop at three checkpoints to pick cards, toss Corn Hole and throw darts. At the end toss Horse Shoes.

The roads, of course, were long and twisty and the scooter handled like it was glued to the roads. F...

Flight Of The Chinese Scooter

June 6, 2024
Three years ago when I bought the new 170cc scooter I had my doubts. Mostly I had used previous small scooters for milk and grocery runs and that was about it. When I did large group rides I didn't think the scooter would have had the speed to hang with the herd. Its chance to prove its worth came in May when I rode the Suicide Prevention ride out of Poughkeepsie. Last year I used the 250cc Honda on this ride and peeled off from the group shortly after the start. Taking the less traveled rou...

The First Run Of 2024

May 2, 2024
Well it finally happened. A Bike Night in Kingston at Ole Savanah restaurant. The temperature was in the upper 70's and the skies were a lovely blue making it a great night for a gathering. When I heard that the event was taking place I pondered for a few days which bike to take. The Kawasaki won the drawing and justified its choice with perfect behavior on the trip there and back. Even more so as I crossed the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge. The American flag on the bridge was flying straight w...

Scooter Run

March 27, 2024
The weather has been off and on for months now so a serious ride hasn't been in the cards. The occasional milk run or short hop around the neighborhood has been all I've been able to do. Except two weeks ago. The temperature had climbed into the sixties and the sun was shining brightly. I decided to free the CF Moto scooter and do a run towards Salt Point on the very pleasing local roads. Now I've been living here for almost eight years and was pretty sure I had most of the roads I usually d...

Welcome to 2024

February 24, 2024
I know it's been too long, but inspiration has been lacking. The weather this Winter has been wet and cold. So much so that my snow blower has been let loose from the garage three times already. Despite that I did actually get the opportunity in the beginning of February to ride twice at very short distances. In a strange coincidence it was both of my red riders who are the smallest vehicles in the class of the garage. The 250 Honda Nighthawk hit the daylight first for a short run into Town ...

2023 Wrap Up

November 8, 2023
Well, maybe a wrap up. If nothing else comes along. This was one heck of a year in some ways and a light ride in others. First, the biggie was the seven days in May/June at Americade. I spent a good amount of time riding the lake region with my longtime friend Marc and his sons totaling about 800 miles on the odometer of my thundering Kawasaki. We rode a guided ride to Whiteface Mountain, made numerous lunch and dinner runs and did a couple of hundred miles trying out the roads in the ver...
