Activities

December 10, 2012
I had the occasion to do some work on the big scooter to keep my battery from dropping dead. As another owner of a CF Moto Fashion described it. "There's a vampire somewhere in the system sucking the life out of the battery." To combat the drain on the battery I installed a quick connect plug for my trickle charger on the scooter's battery and so far, so good. I tried to start it after letting it re-build a charge and it fired right up. On my last Kawasaki I would let the battery hibernate during the winter and then recharge it in the spring. It had a kickstarter on it so I didn't much worry if the battery was drained or not. The scooter has no alternative starting method so I'm a little concerned about battery health. Also it's the original Chinese battery and they don't have a great reputation so I'm sure a little preventative maintenance won't hurt.
The weather wasn't too bad on Friday and groceries were needed so I fired up the 50cc bike and rode it into town. It always surprises people when they see a bike in December and this was no different. I had two or three people ask the usual question. "Isn't it a little cold for that?" My reply is always, "Anybody can do it when it's warm." That always gets a smile. It was refreshing to get out and ride. Hopefully I'll get more trips in.

The Brief Thaw

December 3, 2012
It's fifty degrees outside, the sun is shining and I don't have anywhere to go. Well, that's not completely true, In half an hour I have to take the Black Lab to the Vet for her shots but she won't sit still on the back of the scooter and I have to use the car. During the summer many great days go by unridden but somehow it seems a waste to not drag something out to ride when a day like this comes along and there isn't anyplace to go on two wheels.
Last winter I had many opportunities to hop ...

Winter Days

November 25, 2012
I'm sitting here looking out the window at a light dusting of snow on the ground. My Black Lab is overjoyed but you can see the dubious look on my two Yorkshire Terriers. It's about thirty-one degrees right now and the streets have a light coating of road salt so my big scooter is confined to the garage right now while the 50cc mini-motorcycle awaits its next assignment. These are just the beginning of the dark days of Winter and I have to reflect that this year was a fairly mixed bag of even...

Thanksgiving

November 18, 2012
I know it's almost a week away but here the week will be quick. One stepson is home from college for the week already and the second one will be back soon. It's been cold lately so the big scooter has only been to the job once this week but it did cross 4,000 miles. I had the 50cc out the other day for a shopping trip and it showed, once again, its worth. The temperatures were hovering around 30 degrees and it was running a little strangely. I thought maybe it needed gas since I couldn't tell...

Not Ouch

November 10, 2012
After last weeks torture session I decided to get smart and start using my resources a little better, For years I've had cold weather gear for riding in uncomfortable temperatures. In the distant past I rode a motorcycle in cold down to ten degrees in less pain than last week. First up was to pull out my leather mittens. These gloves have proven themselves on the ski slopes of Whiteface Mountain at twenty below zero. Next was to unearth my riding boots. Sneakers may suffice on a scooter in th...

Ouch

November 3, 2012
Last night I had the distinct pleasure of experiencing my first finger defrost in a long time. Get the sarcasm? My car is in the shop-again-and I had to get to work on Galileo, my big scooter. During the day the temperature was hovering around 50 degrees and there was a light drizzle. As I got ready to leave for work I discovered that my heavy gloves were still wet from the day before. I had to use the 50cc bike to do some shopping and it had been pouring rain. Yes, the car was in the shop th...

Two Up

October 28, 2012
Ever since I got Galileo, the big scooter, it has served in more purposes than a commuter. I've used it for errands, bank runs and as a passenger vehicle. Sara likes the back seat and has ridden with me three times so far since I got it. Today was the longest ride yet. We set out under a slate gray sky to pick up some dolls that a friend of Sara' was doing some sewing on, and the air was damp and chilly. The scooter handled our weight and seemed more steady than usual in side drafts and when ...

Stormy Weather

October 26, 2012
It isn't bad enough that it gets cold early in the season here, but this rain has to stop. I've had to use the car far too often to make me happy and the two wheeled fleet is sitting way too much. Not only is there rain but now the threat of Hurricane Sandy is taking the lead on new stories. Last year when Irene hit we were without power for six days and a Honda saved the day. OK, it was a Honda generator but at least it was a Honda. On a better note I've been able to take the big scooter to ...

Still Riding

October 21, 2012
The weather has started to cool down here and the end of the season is in sight. Last week I took the car to work one morning since it was under thirty degrees and in the dark it feels even colder. Of course it warmed up later and I wished I had the scooter. You have to choose and sometimes a cold ride isn't worth a warm one later. The 50cc bike is still getting a lot of use as a grocery getter and errand machine, something it will continue to do unless the weather is bad when we need milk, ...

Chill Time

October 9, 2012
The winter season is getting closer and riding will be curtailed very shortly. I'm thinking of putting the big Chinese scooter on the Die Hard battery maintainer I have just to preserve it though the non-riding season. Of course that will have to wait until after I stop using it. As previously noted it is a very useful device for foul weather transportation and it is a much warmer two wheeler than any I've owned before. Honda was really on to something when they created this design back in 19...
