With all the restrictions in place, because of Covid19, group events have been curtailed this year. Up until this past weekend the only group ride I had been involved in was a Birthday Ride By in June. All that changed last Sunday with a benefit ride that started in Woodstock, New York. This event was a fundraiser for a fallen Fireman and was put on by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club. The morning started out wet and drizzly and I had just about put the idea of going in the No Can Do file when the rain stopped and the streets started drying.
I decided to take the big scooter, just for laughs, as it's always a challenge to stay close to much larger bikes in a group environment. It's not a real problem as I only have to wait for curves and corners to close the gap. The big V-Twins don't turn well and could ground their floorboards in the turns. The riders have to slow down or scratch the chrome edges. It's always fun to watch from behind them.
The ride took in many of the scenic roads of Ulster County and even the clouds that were present throughout didn't spoil the view and we reached the finish at the Frozen Rainbow in Port Ewen in a couple of hours. It was a nice day and the best was yet to come.
I filled the scooter's tank on the ride home and after eighty-four miles it had used a little more than a gallon. For the whole day the scooter gave me eighty-one mpg. I laughed all the way home. Tomorrow there is a ride starting in Westchester and I'm going big for that. The 750 Kawasaki is coming off the bench. I'll fill you in on how that went later.
